Between 1904 and 1906 Kollwitz created a group of works consisting of around 40 female nudes from different views, in different poses and movements. Not all of these works were created in the same context. Some were probably made when she was still in Paris, while others were drawn in Berlin as indicated by the inscriptions giving the names and addresses of the models.
A number of sheets from this group are predominantly concerned with depicting nudes in side or back views and capture the figures in a standing, walking, sitting or – as in this drawing – kneeling pose. The artist managed to give the bodies a sculptural quality by adding just a few lines and hatchings.
