Käthe Kollwitz, Pregnant Woman, drowning herself,, Cologne Kollwitz Collection © Käthe Kollwitz Museum Köln c 1926, charcoal, NT (1114a)

In this sheet, Käthe Kollwitz returned to a theme that she had already explored in 1909 when she dealt with the issue in her drawings for Simplicissimus.

In early 1924 she worked for the satirical magazine again. Among the works submitted was this drawing which illustrates the despair of a woman whose unwanted pregnancy drives her to commit suicide.
