Käthe Kollwitz, Death seizes a Woman, sheet 4 of the series »Death«, 1934, crayon lithograph, Kn 267 a, Cologne Kollwitz Collection © Käthe Kollwitz Museum Köln

Similar to the previous third sheet of the series, this folio also presents the end of life as a sudden, violent intrusion.

Death in the guise of a skeleton has crept up to a mother and her child from behind without them noticing. He seizes them suddenly and unexpectedly. The woman’s eyes and mouth are wide open and reveal the terror that seizes her as she feels Death’s sudden touch. Her right hand is put over the mouth of the screaming child as she struggles against Death.
