Käthe Kollwitz, Death is recognized as Friend, sheet 6 of the series »Death«, 1937, crayon lithograph, Kn 271 b, Cologne Kollwitz Collection © Käthe Kollwitz Museum Köln

This sixth sheet of the series does not show the face of Death either. The observer only sees the back of a tall figure. What is visible, is the face of the dying man who joyfully greets Death as a friend and puts his hand around the figure’s head. The man’s eyes show that Death has come as a release. As in the figure in »Death on the Road«, sheet 5 of the series, the face of the dying man resembles that of a skull.
